Virechana (therapeutic purgation) is one among Panchakarma Treatments.

It is a purificatory or a detox method which eliminate excess Pitta from the body. For the first few (3-7) days patient has to take medicated ghee. This process of taking ghrita (medicated ghee) is called Snehapana.

After 5-7 days of Snehapana, patient undergoes abhyanga (medicated oil massage) and swedana (steam bath) for 3 days. After analysing doshas and patients condition, different medicines, are given to induce purgation/virechan.

Virechan is performed by administering Virechak Aushadhi (purgative medicine) in milk or lukewarm water. And a strict diet is maintained (as prescribed by the Doctor). It takes 7-15 days to complete this procedure.
